In the shadow of a bridge, on the banks of the Los Angeles river, the frontier shall again be upon us
For the second location of the acclaimed cocktail apothecary, the challenge was to achieve the same element of surprise as the original NYC location. Staying true to its pioneer roots, Apotheke’s second location would again blaze the frontier in an industrial part of East Chinatown. Almost tucked under a bridge, clientele enter and are transported to an opulent and vintage atmosphere serving libations using our proprietary approach to mixology.

Diamonds out of coal
Upon entering the raw space my instincts told me I had finally found a home for Apotheke LA. I was instantly enthusiastic about the challenges of transforming a 1930’s stand alone brick building into a vibrant Los Angeles destination.

Vasco feels at home...

Interior identity
A 1960’s Murano chandelier illuminates one of Apotheke’s distinctive details. The double-gabled rustic roof structure was perfect to showcase a gold-leafed Victorian router edge.

Custom from chemistry
Using my same wall sconce design from Apootheke NYC, I assembled similar fixtures using various lamp parts and chemistry apparatus. For LA, they were elevated with Sheffield-style milk glass.

Textile treatments
I found an embroidered fabric in an DTLA alley shop with a perfect pattern to embellish the bathroom foyer. It was installed like wallpaper. Layers of shellac made it convincing to have existed since the building was erected and created one of my favorite areas.

Culinary craft
The Apotheke cocktail tradition continues in LA, now very near the source of many fresh and organic produce used in our beverage program.

All hands on deck
I love picking up the tools and paint brushes on my projects. It can be quite consuming, but provides a certain soul to the atmosphere; only made possible through the hands of the artist.

Lady in pink
Pink is perfect for the ladies room. Viennese vanity sconces illuminate a custom floral wallpaper on the ceiling.

Meaningful materials
The hunt for the same marble used for the Apotheke NYC bar was successful. Spawned from a Portuguese quarry that’s been extinct for 30 years, some of the last remaining lots of this rare stone were salvaged to fabricate the dramatic back-lit bar surface.

Enter the garden...
The LA location debuted an expansive garden deck with pockets of intimacy. The large reclaimed wood frame cabana shades the outdoor bar, where capiz shell pendant lights sway gently in the breeze.
