Discovering the joys of the laws of attraction

Today, Doyers Street is known for its movie set worthy charm, but for decades its sharp turn would provide refuge for murderous bandits, thieves and gangs.  This unique bend would become notorious for the deadliest street in American history, earning it the name “The Bloody Angle.” The transformation into an opulent 18th century European apothecary would spawn the world renowned mixology brand, Apotheke.

Working with what you find

Discovering the original ceiling under countless layers of karaoke sound proofing was a big bonus for a small budget.  Both floral and geometric, the aged tin once boasted a sultry glamour for an opium den.  I rented a scaffold with wheels, laid on my back about 12 inches from the ceiling and hand painted certain reliefs to create a repeat pattern.

Details in the drinks

Attention to detail is found throughout Apotheke’s interior and certainly in the drinks.  My design philosophy uses a delicate synergy, where the sum of all parts working together, create a subtle but engaging atmosphere.  The same practice is applied to crafting our acclaimed medicinal cocktails.

The concept was bright

When I saw how light cast through an infused botanical beaker, I knew I had to make this the dominant lighting design for Apotheke.  I sourced various chemistry apparatus from lab supply outlets, and created a series of wall sconces and a main chandelier.

International vintage

Antique apothecary jars were collected from around the world to create the grand display on the arched shelves.  Many of the vessels still contain the original compounds, which radiate with authenticity.
